In the nearby future: moving from Alpha 8 to Beta 1

In the nearby future: moving from Alpha 8 to Beta 1

Next version of the game we are planning to launch will introduce some fundamental changes into the game so it is worth explaining it in advance.

Totem Tribe II: Jotun is reaching a more stable phase and we are going from Alpha 8 to Beta 1 with the next wipe. Exact wipe will be announced at least a week in advance, but you have at least 1 month from this moment until it will be launched.

There will be both new features and some deep underlying changes which may affect the way you play the game, so let's talk about our plans with a little bit more detail

New Content

We have plans to add the following next content for Beta 1:

  • Thornsville - new quest location which moves the main storyline forward. You will meet mysterious Mr. Thorn and will spend a night in his legendary mansion wondering who he is and what his true goals are.
  • New set of dungeon-like randomized locations with a quest which unites them - the dungeons received high acclaim from our users so we decided to add something similar. The monster dens were well-regarded for the fact that you can return to them multiple times so these locations will have something that you can return to later even if you have beaten the location.
  • New minigame - now the quest won't have an associated character so you don't have to talk to anyone - let us know if it is a good decision or a bad one. Did you like minigame characters like the Gardener, Tesla, Steve Perfectionisto, and Billy Bonkas or you would rather have minigames without them?
  • Movement Surprises - have to keep it secret, just going to tell you that World Map will become even more exciting.
  • Zoryana's Diplomatic Advisor Quests - she will teach you how to get along with other players and eventually join an alliance. This should be helpful to those players who are not very aware of the multiplayer side of the game.

Changes

The global game sessions in Beta 1 will be different from what it was in Alphas:

  • No longer are there going to be regular global wipes, the game would play like it has been planned initially - players will have their individual timers of around 5 month since the time they started their hero/kingdom
  • This will put all players in fair condition, because right now when someone joins close to the wipe he is having less time to play versus those players who started in the beginning of the alpha. This is especially hurtful to attracting new players as it made no sense to do that right before the wipe. Hopefully it will allow the game to grow more.
  • Close to the wipe time the particular player will start getting warnings at least 1 month in advance to urge him to reach one of the victory types or he will be destroyed by the cataclysm.
  • The warnings and the individual wipe would be scripted like a coming doomsday with mad prophets preaching and other signs showing in your towns so it will be fun to experience story-wise in case you didn't make it.
  • All items purchased with Enkord Cash and spent a month before the cataclysm will be returned if you decide to start anew to make your rush towards victory in front of impending doomsday less hurtful in case you fail to make it in time - you will use those items again in your fresh new start. That's in addition to all your unspent purchased items and Enkord Cash.
  • To make it even better, you will be getting those items purchased with Enkord Cash back if you spent them a month before any kind of defeat, not just the one caused by cataclysm. Specifically in cases when you were wiped by other players.
  • All those refunded items are in addition to the normal Second Wind and Loyalty packages you are usually getting.
  • The positive outcome of this is after Beta 1 launch it won't be so crowded anymore like with each new alpha start.

That being said, it does not mean there will be no global wipes, the Beta 1 is still not a final game, a lot of content is still missing and some new content might require doing a total wipe someday, but with Beta 1 launch we will start to add everything via updates that allow everyone to play on.

Thank you bers for posting this,it puts to rest some worries I had about the changes.I have never completed a victory but maybe now I will have more incentive.I prefer not having the long conversations in mini games but that is just me.overall it seems you have good ideas about the changes, it will be interesting to see how it plays out.  :-)

There is so much different things in this game that it's unlikely to like them all, me I don't like dialogs and nearly skip them all so I prefer it this way.

Yes, the game will be a little more focused, you will have to decide where are you going a little bit earlier in advance. Doing Information Age, then leveling your hero to 50 and only then deciding to go for Wealth Victory is not going to work :)

Is space age is for beta 2 ? Which would happen without a wipe so ? What about a new victory ?

It's too early to talk about Space Age because we haven't even released all of the bits of Information Age yet, but since this age would be reachable only by those who specifically focused on Science Victory, it's not on our priority list. We are even considering making Science Victory reachable even without Space Age and adjust it later when we will have it.

Speaking about new victory types - they would be added via regular updates, I think we can find a way to add them without wipe.

Are you saying you will not put us all 2-4 cells from each other now? Or you are saying after 5 months, it will not be crowded because people will be wiped?

This might be a silly question.  When we finish a victory will we be wiped like we are now, or do we keep playing to the end of 5 months? we are wiped when we reach it now aren't we?

Yes, you will be wiped too, but there are some rewards for reaching it. I.e. reaching victory increases your stat limit by 10 (which stat depends on which victory). We are also considering adding better rewards though like unique visual items, extra skill/perk points and maybe unique artifacts.

I do not like the dialog games, but I do like the others.

I do like to have a "story" line with the puzzles. But I do like to read. The only type of conversations that drive me nuts is the one in Karfaree, where I have to chat to 40 folks. It is about like the movable rocks in the caves. Ugh.

I do not know what a 5-month limit will help players who start playing too late. But those who do not invest money in the game - will never be able to get all the tools and learn all the quest areas. :( I hope that after the official release in this game there will be what is sought in online games first of all - the ability to play as long as I want. For me the game is more than 5 months interesting.

I hate the minigames.

I like mini-games but the dialogues can get a bit repetitive and to be honest I like the games where my hero can be doing something else while I am playing the game.  You can't do that with the candy puzzle because it requires dialogue for each level.

Look forward to playing mini-games every day.   Very happy to hear there will be a new one.   Billy has caused me to laugh at loud at times.   Do not like when it gets repetitive, though.   Very excited about the changes to come, especially new locations.   Great work and great game!

I like the mini-games and do not mind reading all the dialogues.

I like the mini games also. My favorite is the telsa one.  I do like that the flower one lets you skip some of the instructions in the dialogue.  I have never had the candy puzzle, and lost several puzzles in jumper towns. Would be nice to have them show up in another town when this happens.

I like the quest part of the minigames, and the exp and items that come with it. But the dialogues could be shorter. Also, don't like the fact that I have to talk to Billy Bonkas before I can do the puzzle.

I love the mini games. I play them every day! Still gutted that I got the candy one in a hop town this time. My favourite is also the Tesla one (and he's very generous with his reward drops). The dialog is ok, I don't mind it. I agree with ubique that it is annoying your hero has to be in town to talk to Bonkas before you can do the candy puzzle.
