English only on common chat??

Once again the topic of what language should be spoken on common chat has raised its ugly head. Is there any chance that you can clarify once and for all, so that people can refer back to this thread, what the "rules" for chat are. As far as I was aware from the conversation I personally had with Bers and also from when it has been brought up on common chat, people are allowed to speak in their native language and that people do not have to speak only in English and that the only rules that apply to chat are that "gutter talk" is off limits and rightly so and no xenophobia or sectarianism will be entertained.
If I have this wrong fair enough but some clarification would be really helpful to stop further disagreements on this issue

I feel this issue has nothing to do with "xenophobia" or "sectarianism" - which are both derogatory terms accusing others of unreasonable behavior or attitude. The discussion in chat was mainly about what is thought to be courteous and what is not in a common chat area. It was about courtesy.

Do you know what "xenophobia" means? It is a term used for people who are afraid of foreigners. What? Totally inappropriate. Maybe using a language that few understand in a public chat - which makes others uncomfortable - when a private chat is available may also be inappropriate.

What occurred this evening was a discussion .. nobody mentioned not using a foreign language. This point was clarified many times. It was a discussion about an opinion - because I simply think it displays a deliberate lack of courtesy.

I think it is one thing when players get on and occasionally use another language, but another when they do it for long periods of time on a daily bases. The common chat is for all players and not for a few to fill up with what is not intended for all to read.

Well, if we have a rule it means breaking it should be punished, otherwise this is not a rule, but a suggestion. The official lanugage of the game at the moment is definitely English, the question is - should we enforce it in public chat? When alpha 4 will be released and a lot of new people will be invited we will enable "speaker horn" consumption for public messages to limit flood in the public chat - maybe that alone would be sufficient to move all floody conversations into private?

I have to agree with Simba that we did not say it should not be allowed, just that it was rude. I also mentioned that when the speakerhorn is enabled it will help solve the problem.

Simba  you need to re-read what I said and try to understand it.  Also, thank you very much, but I am well aware of what both those words mean and there is no need to be condescending.  I said last night that as far as I was concerned, after having specifically spoken to Bers about this issue, the only rule that applies to common chat is - no gutter talk, no xenophobia and no sectarianism.  I did not say that the disagreement last night was any of those things.
And once again I will say that it is completely wrong of those of you who only speak English to insist that the rest of us do so too.  For you to say last night that people  who speak in their native language on common chat are very rude, is also wrong.  For people to use translation software to find out what others are saying, in my opinion, is just plain nosey.  As I said last night,  when Berserker is speaking to someone in a language that is not English on common chat are you going to tell him he is being rude?  Contrary to what has been said,  I doubt it very much, and have  yet to see anyone who has a problem with the use of other languages and who have  said that they will pull him up over it, doing so. Nor have I seen anyone  telling Berserker to stop, even though the opportunity to do so has arisen on several occasions as he often speaks to people on CC in several different languages.   Also Simba, if you feel uncomfortable with the use of other languages, that is your feeling and others are not responsible for how you feel or for what make you feel uncomfortable.  Like I said that discomfort is simply borne out of the fact that you do not understand what they are saying.
Mari - as you say common chat is for everyone and therefore everyone is entitled to speak their own language.
So Bers - can we take it that speaking languages other than English on common chat, until the introduction of speaker horns, is allowed for those who find writing in English difficult?

Ofcourse at the moment it is allowed, otherwise we will have to punish for that. Also I think it might be a bit disrespectful to speak in non-English language in public chat in which I am also guilty, because English is the de-facto standard for international communication. However I am not ready to solve this issue right now. I think we will have to wait until alpha 4, more people, and enforced speaker horns, to see what situation will be then and if it needs enforcing to English or not.

I have no problem with people speaking other languages on chat.  Not everyone can speak English or have a harder time with it than others.  Why should they be alienated from common chat.  I most certainly don't think it's rude.  How do you think they feel seeing all the English and not being able to understand it?  Do they think it's rude?  It's a two-way street.

Yes, English may be the official language, but it's the development stage.  Not allowing people to speak their native language is discriminatory, IMO.  If anyone wants to see what people are talking about in a foreign language, you can easily find a program to quickly translate it for you.  Or if you think it's rude, don't watch common chat.  It's as simple as that.

Why this is even an issue is beyond me.

That's my 2 cents.  :)

how can it be nosey if you want to translate what is said on common chat? It is public place.

Why is it wrong for me to express an opinion? I have that right. You can argue against it all day, call it many things, turn it inside out and upside down, but in the end I still have the right to express my opinion. That is simply all I am doing.

It is not nosey to translate what others are putting on common chat. If they don't want others to know what they are saying, then they should use PM.

This issue is very common on many games and here is what they did to resolve it..when  non-English speaking gamer logs on and addresses the chat, they are welcomed with English unless there is another native speaking member present. This causes the non-English speaking gamer to realize its mostly English and they attempt to find someone to help them in their language..that usually ends up in private chat by the native speaker (moderator). BUT, if they don't it should not be considered rude or unacceptable to anyone (which doesn't really sound like it is). Lets not argue because of personal differences here...I say the ones who speak another language will just feel more comfortable in private chat OR when they learn a few common words (for help or friendship) in English while chatting in common. There will always be those who agree with their own language and right to speak it. The gamer then invites the newbie to private chat until they are comfortable in common...no one minds a few questions or broken English here...ever!! What is just annoying at times is not being able to have a conversation because its hard to keep up when the common is loaded. I just look for someone I want to chat with and private chat with them. I haven't found a person on this game that I don't like..and I know we have all met some pretty nice people here from other countries. Bers, when you implement the speaker horn, alot of this will change...pay to chat? lolol Hope no one is offended at my reply
