Artifacts and Item System Improvements

Artifacts and Item System Improvements

We decided to distract ourselves from bug-fixing and optimizations for a bit and work on new stuff for a change. Therefore, after releasing random caves, we began working on the item system. Today's update is the first glimpse at it - Artifacts!

What are Artifacts?

Artifacts are similar to regular equipment items wearable by your hero, except they have extra stats (up to five). The stats will allow you to make your hero even stronger if you can gather up powerful gear.

Artifact Traits

Artifacts add additional prefixes and/or suffixes to the regular item name depending on their power and traits. There are almost 100 different traits that could spawn on an artifact item, varying from a simple stat increase such as strength, to something more exotic - like a chance to pick up two items instead of one during your adventures. Not all of them are working though, so expect bugs.

Artifact Categories

There are five artifact categories divided by their power:

  1. Enhanced (power 1-17, blue)
  2. Enchanted (power 18-32, light blue)
  3. Rare (power 33-41, orange)
  4. Legendary (power 42-47, yellow)
  5. Godly (power 48-50, white)

Artifacts have been in the game for a while and some of you might have already seen some weird items with extra stats, but now they are official and there are a lot of possible modifiers.

Equipment Attrition

Along with artifacts, in this update we have added equipment attrition. The gear was not meant to be permanent, but instead it was meant to wear down after use. Now it does just that - slowly wears out. Later, when we implement repair, you will be able to fix worn-out items with proper hero perks. But for now it is not possible.

Item Spawning Revised

Before this update the chests often contained some pretty worthless items - you could easily get chicken legs inside a big golden chest - which was pretty discouraging. Now the chests spawn more items and should be more fair in terms of their content (including artifacts). The rewards from monsters have been revised as well - monters not always spawn rewards now.

Let us know in the comments below what kind of artifacts have you managed to find and where you got them. Also post how many chests you have opened since this update and how many artifacts you have obtained so we can understand how frequent and how well artifact spawning is working.

I also attacked one opponent's dwelling.

Old George (Georgios) - Hero level 4

Since yesterday, have opened an unlocked chest (that I don't remember unlocking) containing a chisel.

Have fought a blue muscard, who dropped nothing, and raided probably two (maybe only one) neighbors' undefended towns. (Had killed defenders off in their players' absence several days ago.)

Durability 100%: Leaf Bracers

99%: Plebeian Helmet, Plebeian Collar, Spiky Club, Plebeian Coat, Spartan Shield

89%: Sandals (that we arrived in), Plebeian Skirt. (Guess I shouldn't have thrown away the other two or three such skirts I'd picked off trees and the ground! Particularly since Inventory space seems despite expectations to be quite elastic.)

Also 100%, all equipment not worn, including Apa Dagger used to cut a cabbage but not in fighting.

Jane Young - Hero level 1 (summoned yesternight)

Fought the three tutorial battles against mushrooms, with Club dropped as programmed in last battle; no other fighting. Visited Herald's Home and Opposition Hideout at least twice each. Removed all reachable fog SFAIK in all 3 locations; has not yet finished filling in Wade at the Hideout.

Durability 100%: *Wrist Ladies' Gloves (removed as soon as Club picked up if not before), *Cocktail Hat (worn thruout), Leaf Shoulders, *Art Deco Dress (worn thruout), Primitive Club. * = Clothing arrived in.

87%: *Heels, *Short Pantaloons, both worn thruout. Latter now stowed so won't wear out further until and unless they need to be visible!

I have to say I'm confused about all of this... The only pro I can see is that it enriches the game play a tiny bit. But if at some point of time each player reaches a conclusion that they have to play less - I don't think it's worth it.

The attrition is a part of a more rich item system which involves crafting, enchanting, repairing, deconstructing items into ores and so on. If it upsets yo so much that you can see only solution is to stop playing then I don't know what to say to you. I can only hope majority of players will come to the different conclusion.

I tend to be with ubique on this. The problem is that y'all have enthusiastically implemented the tearing down part while seeming to provide hardly any restoration. Iff that's truly the case, it seriously affects game balance.

My Georgios won't at all mind going near-naked; he's a Classical Greek! But if being unarmored or under-armored causes more frequent resurrections or even means there are some monsters he can't get past that he otherwise could, yeah, that will make us unhappy.

Hopefully my Miss Young's dress will wear until it can be replaced.

Chests Opened
Medium size chest required 5000 wood production gave: Cornucopia, 2000 iron, 1000 stone, 1500 wood, 200000 tech points
Big size chest required presence of 40 Artiste units gave: Trommel, Computer type tech vial and 2 other tech vials.

Hero Equipment Degradation
Crusader Arms: 87%, Great Helm: 84%, Metal Shoulders: 90%, Pernach: 71%, Pavice: 90%, Subcoated Mail: 90%, Forged Boots: 84%, Mail Skirt: 84%, Crusader Belt: 100%

The whole proses took me about four hours (including the report writing time) with several breaks.

P.S. You can put a counter in the chests (like supporter’s pysanka), so after a week or ten days maybe, they can disappear or replaced by smaller ones. Training 70 priests is going to take a life in time and resources. Also the food production of a whole town to feed them!
