Major Interface Update #1

Major Interface Update #1

Since the launch of Alpha 6 we have been working primarily on the long-needed interface overhaul, and today we are launching the first pack of changes.

We had already added some minor changes in earlier updates, (like the new upgrade confirmation screen and information panel at the bottom of buildings), but today it is a complete overhaul of what is inside your town.

So what exactly has been changed?

  • Build Menu - This is a long awaited change. Now it is more than just a build menu. It's also a convenient summary screen of all buildings you have in your town. It shows what is present and what is not, levels of buildings, their quantity, includes the ability to quickly locate a necessary building, and so one. Hopefully you will enjoy this. Now you will see why the building button has been moved to the right side.
  • Minimap -  Have you ever struggled to find lumber income buildings to upgrade them in the new town and instead clicked on stone or iron or food building first before locating the lumber? Well, not anymore. The new minimap helps distinguish one from the other. It may look overloaded at first, but you will get used to it and will find it quite helpful. It shows all the interesting stuff - idols, puzzles, monsters, chests, NPCs and so on. The minimap will also be bigger in the future, so those icons will be even more prominent.
  • Buttons Style - Hopefully these are now more streamlined and noticeable, thus easier on the eyes.
  • Building panels are gone - There are now brief details underneath the building, and control panel above a selected building, with a detailed info screen about the building when you click question mark button. The new design allows you to order units, upgrades, petroglyph tasks, and so on - with less clicks.
  • Unit order screen - I have previewed the new unit order screen on twitter, but now you can actually try it. It allows you to order multiple units in one go.
  • Upgrade order screen - This is similar to the unit order screen, but very helpful in showing which upgrade applies to what kind of units before you order it.

Keep in mind - while this is a whole lot of changes - this is far from what we actually plan to do. There is a world map screen which needs even more work, but even the town screen is only partially reworked. We will be adding further improvements as well.

The update is rough and untested so make sure you report all bugs. Let us know what you think about these changes in the comments below.

Bravo team! I haven't had time to really play around with the new interface but what I have used I like.  A lot!  Love the clean look of the buttons and I think I'll have no problems with the build menu.

The mini-map is a trifle busy but I do like that you've shown us where our mobs are and chests and the like.  Curious though, will the location of any travelers vary depending where they are on a given day?  To be honest, I haven't looked all the closely having not had the time.   But overall I really love the changes you've made.

The more I use it the more I like the changes. the only thing I do not like is that I have to actually enter the upgrade button to see what I am missing to upgrade it. The training is very nice for units. I love the build menu.

Love almost all of the changes, awesome job!

The two things I would change which have already been mentioned - the buttons are just too prominent.  Second is how far you have to click to figure out how much you need to upgrade a building before doing it.

Perhaps some hover info could be implemented as a compromise?

Thanks for all the work you have done.  I think the dig sites and fishing spots could have been left off the mini-map but love everything else.  If you had done nothing else but put in the easier way to train troops, I would have been happy but the build menu and everything else makes this update one of may favorites.  Really Great work!!!!

With what little experience I have with this game, I have noticed a few things that have impacted my game play. Some have been touched upon so I will not reiterate those, other than my additional comments on those issues.

Build Menu-love most of the changes. I would want to see the time clock for the current building being built remain at the top of the screen while the build menu is open.

Build Menu-I would like to see more contrast like Ivy Joe mentioned, between what you can build & what has been built.

Buttons-I like the change.  The past buttons were hard for me to click on, especially the tiny buttons in the middle on the screen where you decide what scout goes from one side of the screen to the other. I have no problem with these new buttons.

MiniMap- here I would like to see the hero having its own color that nothing else has.

Changing from one Hero to another- much faster

It's there.  I think under the question mark button.

Yes, abnaxsus, it's under the ?, a red button with a single down-arrow, tool-tipped "Downgrade building".

This is either disingenous or forgetful. For as long as I've known about it, the easy, rapid way to find the lumber buildings is to click on the lumber line of the Resources drop-down in the upper left-hand corner.

Admittedly, when you have more than one clump producing resources--5 here, 2 there, or whatever--the minimap makes that easier.

the only downside I can see is that you can no longer see if the explorers are exploring or returning to your town, I did like to see my little guys feet marching,

That display was also useful to find out exactly where in multiple towns you needed to move a unit--not just Explorers but army troops--to or from.

The Build menu has lost a little functionality even while gaining a lot.

It is no longer possible to scroll down the listiings to find a particular bulding by name. If you don't know what it looks like, you may need to click on quite a few candidates.

This could be remedied by having a tooltip appear when the cursor is over each building picture.

If you use the find next marching army button it shows in left upper corner how many units and it says in the bottom whether they are coming or going. Plus when you click on the building you can instantly tell if something needs trained by whether the background around the unit is highlighted or grey

When training troops in a building that allows multiple types you can no longer see what you have that lived to know what you need to retrain without going to the ? before training - and need to remember LOL.  That, with not knowing the resources needed to upgrade without clicking upgrade, are the two most aggravating things for me in an overall great update.

I agree with Cleo, the minimap is really crowded and can be overwhelming ,in my opinion it makes it look more cartoon like. I do like the clean cut new look of the buttons. I dont like that I have to attempt to train a unit to find out the amount of resources it will need, but I do love that I can train more units easier. The downgrade, move  or destroy building its easier found, which I really like.  Overall , I think it a big step towards improving the gaming experience and like with any changes there are great things and not so good things  :)              Great job !

you can see by the colour of the number underneath the expl if they are coming or going. green when going and grey when coming back. the same goes for your army.

Before the update you still had to click on the free slot to figure out how many resources do you need, so it is the same number of clicks than before, except now it shows if you can train it or not right away judging from button color.
