Steam Puzzle

1 2

I am finding the Steam Puzzle quite hard.  If anyone has any hints or screen shots, they would be greatly appreciated.

It took me a while to figure out, but I think I've got it.

****!!!SPOILER!!!****

The vents are laid out in a grid. Vents can have a 3-way pipe on top (like a T), or they can be closed. You can turn the pipes when your hero is close. The 5th turn closes the vent. You can ignore the steam clouds.

Each part of the 3-way pipe has to point towards another vent with pipes on top. If you can't connect all three pipes to another one, you need to close off that vent.

You need to connect the engine to the furnace with one uninterrupted pipe.

In the image below I mapped out my grid. The yellow cells are vents. The ones with an X are closed, the other ones have their pipes turned so they point in the direction of the green cells.

I have tried your method and none of my end vents have three facing so if I close them, then they all end up closed.  the picture did not help as it does not look like mine - need more help please - this is way too confusing

Mine isnt like yours, my engine and boiler are at side of each other and i seem to have a lot of vents that i cant make 3 connect. do you have to have 3 in a row connecting,? I have closed them all and tried doing them one at a time seeing if they connect but I havnt got more than 1 row x

I've only seen one of these puzzles so far, and the above worked for that. Do all the vents have 3 pipes, or do some of yours have a different number?

For me it really helped when I mapped them out on paper, so I could visualise the whole thing. If you want to map out yours and post it here, I could have a look.

No, it's not 3 in a row connecting - if the pipes on top are like a T, you need to connect something to each arm of the T.

I know the image I posted isn't the same for everyone, it's just an example of how things connect.

Go through it systematically, like you would with the beacon puzzle. Start at either the furnace side or the engine side, follow the grid in one direction and see if you hit a vent with pipes. If you do, and the vent has 3 pipes on top, see if you can find two other vents in two other directions etc.

It's not an easy puzzle and it took me quite a while to figure out my grid. But that's the best I can explain it.

Edit: This image shows a T-shaped pipe and the directions it needs to connect in. Bottom left is a closed one: https://imgur.com/a/JYDLX

Hooey, yours is definitely more complex than the one I had. I keep coming up with the same solution as you have in your screenshot, except that I would also close the yellow one at the bottom and the two pink ones that aren't connecting to anything else. If that's not it, then I'm stumped right now, too.

Are all connections definitely T-shaped?

I forgot to post some explains: pink are opened in way of arrows, yellows are closed. Different colors of arrows was only for help me to not forget right way.

I tried to close those two out of path, but nothing changed. I will return later, maybe i something overlooked.

Yes, all connections was T shaped.

Solved, they are 3 out of path.

Some steam clouds have pipes, so I don't think you can all ignore them.

Where are the rest of your valves? Please show the full grid of all your valves, the steam puzzle is like the beacon puzzles and you keep turning left or right at each valve from the boiler until you reach the engine.

Each valve that is used has to have one pipe facing back towards the boiler, another pipe facing in the direction you are going towards the engine and the third pipe must face a closed valve.

Therefore the only thing the corner valves can be used for is as a closed valve.

Well, I'm afraid that's all. I have only 5 valves and still cannot get it...

There must be more valves. In your sketch there is only one valve that can be opened (the one to the left of the boiler), and not a single one that could point towards the machine. Have you cleared the entire 10x10 grid and checked all the steam clouds?

I've checked your steam puzzle. This one is soluble. Just keep on trying, you missing some valves.

Please help me with this one :)

Circles are normal vents, dark grey is blank floor

T1- T6 are the T-shaped pipes I can manipulate

I walk the entire area and close all the pipes so they are flat. I then find the boiler, locate the direction the pipe comes out, find the first closed pipe, locate the section that is either a row of nothing but open vents or a wall at the edge of the whole area. You position the T side (the one with no pipe coming out)

The T side always has the open vents or a blank wall cause there are no pipes to connect to it. Then you go to either the left or right of that pipe, to the next flat closed pipe, do the same thing,

the next pipe is either to the left or right or up and down not in the same row, just like the beacon puzzle. until you make it around to the pipe pointing at the engine. None of the puzzles are the same, and they are too large to have one picture of it to share. But the biggest secret is the T side of the pipe or the side with no pipe coming out lined up with the row of open vents (no pipes or closed pipe) to connect to.

I struggled with steam puzzles, for a long time.  I did all sorts of things, to try to understand them.  This is the final guide I made for myself, my alliance and finally, to share with everyone.

I will both post the link (often a clearer picture)  https://imgur.com/YbPVazu  and 'embed' the picture.  (In Imgur, right click on the picture, copy image, return hear and paste (control V).

"In imgur, you can attach text to the picture, as below"

Oct 2019 To start, walk the whole area and close all the pipes (switch to blanks). On the bigger ones, if I get stuck, I switch all pipes, to blanks again, and work backwards from the engine. This guide was several months in the making. Like others, I struggled with steam puzzles, for a long time. I used the template above (in paint programme), to map out everything. Then I could see the whole puzzle."
