And one more question - if this is not the place, I can open a new thread in forum - if I calculate the HP's of my army and hero, and they are more than the HP's of a group of monsters, does this mean that I can win the battle (I understand that this is a very rough estimate and there are other factors that can affect the result)

There is a detailed step by step replay of the battle in the report where you can see how the battle is turning out. HP is not the only stat - there is attack and defense.

I have a suggestion.  I just settled a new town and while I was uncovering the fog I found 6 sets of monsters, the last ones being worms who killed my hero and now I have to wait 3.5 hours for my hero to resurrect.  If monsters are supposed to spawn aprx every 12 hours surely this should also apply to new towns and that they shouldn't spawn for the first 12 hours.  I still have more fog to uncover in Kildare so I hope I don't get killed again.  I have deliberately not battled monsters in Dublin for the past couple of days because I don't want my whole army killed by monsters.  It would appear now that I have no options but to allow my army to die and have to spend another 24hours retraining my whole army if I come across anymore that are hidden by the fog.

i agree with AnneeR that new towns might do better if the monsters did not spawn till the town was 12 hours old

I second this suggestion.  I have battled monsters the last couple of days, for research vials that I can't use being finished with research, and have lost a number of troops, including horsemen.  The dendrogs and mushrooms are not a problem.  I invariably lose troops fighting muscards and birdhouses and I refuse to even try the worms because retraining an army of almost 100 units is expensive and time consuming.  My heroes are all level 31 except for Illyria and she has only fought dendrogs.  She lost heavily and had to be resurrected fighting muscards.  There is no way an entire army can go to a newly settled town and stay, so we have to take the army and send it away as soon as possible to avoid starvation.

I take all weaponry, ballistae, cats and rams together with chariots, horsemen, archers, hunters, legionnaires, praetorians and centurions.  It has been my experience that the archers fare the best.  Cavemen come in there somewhere.  I will have to look at my reports to give a more detailed picture but dragging my entire army around from town to town just to stand a chance seems cumbersome.

I too share the same concern.  I would like to add that having monsters that I can not defeat has prohibited me from getting to some chests.  I need to get to chests to see if they contain blueprints.

The white flag is up on a new town for a certain amount of time. The purpose of this is to give a new town time to develop before being attacked. The spawning of monsters should at the very least follow this tenet. BTW in my opinion the flag is up for too short a period of time considering the amount of time it takes just to get the first resources together in Classic Age.  I need to feed an army to fight monsters ... so please give me a little bit of time to harvest some resources :)

You have actually made the opposite example. Monsters preventing you from reaching the chest is actually a good example - they are monsters and you have to defeat them to reach something interesting on the other side. That fact will give you incentive to grow stonger hero and army to defeat them and see what is in the chest.

A 1 hour white flag is not enough on a new town so particularly if you are not going to change things so that the monsters wont spawn in new towns for the first 12 hours.  You want to send our heroes back to lvl 1 so what kind of chance is that going to give us, even with 100 units in our army in new towns,  I haven't even uncovered half the fog in Kildare.

Who said testing would be easy? :) You will have to maneuver between stronger monsters to defeat weaker ones and gain experience and afterwards maybe have chance to defeat stronger ones.

Lol Berserker - well no you didn't say it would be easy  but I don't think the monsters will want me throwing maneur (that would be cows poop) at them and I most certainly am not picking it up  either :D

That implies that I have enough resources to do so.  If I don't have blueprints to get stronger, there is no way I can defeat the monsters.

Bers - I respectfully implore you to take a poll of your players regarding our desires/needs for a pleasurable game versus (and I don't mean to be harsh) your perception of what the game should be.   Having read all of the forum posts, paying attention to the chat, and talking to others, I believe that if you want to retain your core audience, you have to listen a bit to them.  I am going to take this to a new thread.

What blueprints has to do here with monsters? In order to get stronger you need to level up your hero and train bigger army. Perhaps you meant figurines?

Simba II started a new town. My first concern was about monsters, so I brought a substantial army with her. I left the machinery home, so there were only foot soldiers battling. (the big artillery does not do much for monster fighting) Simba II did run into monsters in the town square, and many other places, but used "retreat" until she found a way to fight them on her own terms. I was able to clear all the fog and avoid monsters I did not want her to fight. Using the flag in short paces was the key to avoiding whatever I wanted to. The town is now developing nicely.

With a nice army of archers, classic age infantry, and witchdoctors, I was able to beat all monsters except the worms, which I avoided completely.

The monsters spawning too close to the town buildings is indeed a bug and will be fixed eventually.

Glad to hear that as I was about to ask why towers don't defend against monsters that are only 1 cell away from them, inside our towns.

Well I reckon that you should be the one to test out that theory and ehm get back to me and let me know how it worked out for you lol.  Until we can train Kamikaze units I'll be avoiding those worms at all costs :D
