[SURVEY] Performance problems

Right now we are working on performance optimization. And we would like to collect some data which would help us to investigate problems more deeply and also test our solutions for different cases.

In order to collect "right" data to address issue we are trying to solve, there is are few requirements:

  1. FPS in game drops down dramatically below 10fps.
  2. Buttons/interface almost stops responding to mouse clicking (not often but usually).
  3. Report must contain city/kingdom where it happened. (Attached screenshot would be great or at least text explanation where to look at)

This kind of problems are not always 100% reproducible, so you may have some spots in town when it often  appears, but not always (re-entering into the area can trigger this problem to appear or disappear)

About "How am I supposed to get that FPS?" :

  1. When you in game - switch to "Donate" tab
  2. Hold down and press next buttons: Ctrl+Alt+(left and right mouse buttons) + d
  3. Now you will see "FPS" and other debug info in top left corner of the screen (to disable this info repeat 1-2 steps)

So feel free to post your report there if you have faced such problem

In any town when I start the game I have 60fps, quickly it goes down to 30, then if I play a few days without closing the game it can even go bellow 10fps. I have to do a second click almost any time on any interface button, in the meantime I will use an autohotkey script to simulate a spam clicking when I maintain left click.

Also when the chat is full of old messages, each time another message appears the game is frozen for half a second.

Here is a picture from my town Sofia (6651/1167), hero lucille

Fps is changing from 17 to 30, but not higher, lag in picking items after the battle with monsters, opening the inventory, moving army.I exited to the world map and tried to enter the town again - white screen (army is not between the buildings, it is on the verge of the city terrain). FPS is frozen to 1

Don't know if this is what you need.

My FPS started out at 94 and quickly dropped down to 18 and then to 5 and back up to 11 when in my dwelling (Killing Moon) at Lilah.  I was using private chat, downgrading a building and upgrading a building at the same time.

My FPS fluctuates wildly so do you still want screen shots of it?

Tsunami: in the world map my FPS is in the 90s, in town it is in the 40s, but it does fluctuate a lot. small town or big town, makes no difference. was also in private chat at the time I checked the FPS. the towns were leveling up the church.

Don't know if this is what you need.

This was exactly what we needed

To goznij, River and Tsunami: Thanks for the info, we know about this problem with effects (building upgrade and so one) and messages. But in this thread we are focusing on collecting information about performance bug, which is not always reproducible on other PC. Just like lucille have posted

To ubique: try this approach:

  1. You need to locate game configuration file "config.xml". It's located in same folder as folder "screenshots" where screenshots are stored.
(example screenshots location: "C:\ProgramData\Enkord\Totem Tribe 2\Screenshots"
    config.xml location: "C:\ProgramData\Enkord\Totem Tribe 2" )
  2. Create reserve copy of "config.xml" file just in case something go wrong..
  3. Open "config.xml" with text editor like notepad.
  4. Find text "0" and edit it into "1".
  5. Save changes in "config.xml" and restart the game.
  6. Now when you start TT2 you will see "FPS" and other debug info in top left corner of the screen.

By the way even by modifying my resolution in all the appropriate xml files when game is closed, I can't switch to 1600x900, mine highest is just 1440x900.

yes, this problem exists in my cities. The frame rate seems to drop when scrolling up or down below the city buildings. The frame rate speeds up when in the city area. This is East Ender scrolled towards the top of the island. Fps drops to 3 ... see attached screenshot.

I tried to scroll the terrain of my town Plovdiv (6646/1176) starting from the edges - difficult movement, screen jumping to and fro. FTP froze to 1, over the town buildings changed from 25 to 33, but everywhere else was constantly 1.

Usually I exit to the world map first going to the buildings of the town and then pressing button World, but this time by mistake tried to exit directly from the current location on the terrain - this is the result:

Common freezes I can observe (they are freezes so 0 FPS, doesn't feel responsive/comfortable)

  • Opening the building tab menu (2-3 sec freeze)
  • Switching to the ranking tab (>6 sec freeze, and then it show the "Loading" for several more seconds)
  • Switching to other tabs (~1 sec freeze depending on the tab)
  • Switching cities from inside a city and World > City (3-4 sec freeze)
  • City > World (1sec freeze)

Otherwise, my game is almost always running smoothly even when scrolling. 40ish FPS when not doing anything special on the city view, >60 FPS in the world view

Specs

  • Intel i7 920 4x 2.67 GHz
  • nVidia GTS 250, a not-so-good video card
  • A very good SSD
  • More than enough RAM

Thanks everyone for reports.
To lucille and BigEnder. Check if this issue is still present in your towns after last update.

In first place, why is the game that slow ? What is so different for example with starcraft brood war or age of empire 2 which run more than fine with similar graphics ? Really good reasons or bad coding ?

Reason is lies within graphics engine we where using for long time (I think from original totem tribe). And right now this engine can't handle optimally all functionality we are needed from him. But such issue cannot be fixed easily, because it require deep and complex rework, so we can't just switch to another engine. Right now we are doing reworking bit by bit, although there is also alot other job to do. It definitely would be fixed, but it's hard to tell when.

Sorry, missed this post - no, all issues of this kind are gone, even in towns with all buildings improved all the way from the beginning. There is only several seconds delay when exiting to the world map, but this is something I could live with. The FPS is no more lowered to 0 or 10. Thank you very much!
