The game will have "ages" that your tribe can reach after focusing on
research. You start in Dark Age, then progress into Stone Age,
Antiquity, Medieval Age, and so on. The quiestion, how should be
call them in general? Is Age a good name? Or maybe we should use 'Epoch'
instead? or 'Era'? Or maybe something else? These ages are not tied to
specific time frame, they are more like an indicator to your country
development so I am not sure if 'Age' is appropriate. Let me know your thoughts.

I think Epoch is better simply because it's less ambiguous. We tend to use 'age' to refer to many different periods of time, whereas we only use 'epoch' to refer to cultural or technological periods of time.

I vote for "Eras". I don't know, but this remember me some epic movies like 10.000 B.C. 300 and so on.

The problem with Epoch or Era is how to call Epochs? Stone Age or Medieval Age sound pretty natural. How do we call it otherwise? Stone Era or Stone Epoch? Is it usable?

I think "stone age" etc is the best choice because people heard it already in other games/movies, this sound like less stuff to learn before being able to play, which is good because people tend to hate having to learn a lot of stuff and play tutorials.

Stone Era, stone age, Medieval age, Medieval era. both work. Definitly wierd with epoch though. I like era better because since I'm getting old I don't like to think about age, lol

That's exactly what I mean. While I don't like the generic "Age" cause it has other uses, expressions like "Stone Age" or "Medieval Age" are pretty common and widely used. However if you think Stone Era or Medieval Era is nothing alien, we probably will switch to that. I would like to hear native speakers' thoughts on this.

I think 'era' is possibly the better choice... looking at the definitions of them, era - a long and distinct period of history with a particular feature or characteristic; epoch - a distinctive period in the history of someone or something. We are essentially looking at a period of time with particular characteristics. Epoch does sound cool though... :)

What about era names? Currently we have: Dark Age, Stone Age, Antiquity, Medieval Age, Renaissance, Industrial Age, Information Age, Space Age, End of Time. If using era instead, they will be called: Dark Era, Stone Era, Antiquity, Medieval Era, Renaissace, Industrial Era, Information Era, Space Era, End of Time. Are the latter names sound good enough? Nothing wacky?

A few of the era names sound awkward but some sound ok, but all the names with age sound better so i'll go with age ;) not a native english speaker myself though...

Those sound weird to me. I think you're right that if you're talking about individual technological periods it's better to use "Stone Age" than anything else, simply because that's the most common and the easiest to understand. However, it's when you use the word "age" without anything before it. So if you said "Players go through different ages"... that's where the word gets confusing. So I think it's probably better to have one rule for singular ages, and one rule for plural. If talking in singular you always use the identifying term before age (ie. Stone Age, Bronze Age, etc) and then for plural you could talk about it as an era or whatever other term is more suitable (ie. "Players go through different eras"). I hope that makes sense...

I think it will be confusing to use both, there will be places in GUI where we will have to refer to those ages with one simple word like: Age: Stone Age Age: Antiquity Another idea on the top of my head: what if we use both? Like Stone Age Era, Antiquity Era, Medieval Age Era, etc. This way we could use the term "era" everywhere and will be less confusing. On the other side I suspect "Stone Age Era" is ugly :)

Sorry Berserker, not a good look (stone age era). I think you guys are just going to have to choose one and run with it. If you keep in mind what Nana said, about being specific when using the word, you shouldn't run into too much trouble.

Well, what about this? Dark Age, Stone Age, Antiquity, Medieval Era, Renaissance, Industrial Era, Information Era, Space Age, End of Time.
And maybe you should have an age called "Eleventh hour" after the End of time.

In looking up the actual uses of these terms, it looks like Age is the correct term, Era covers a much broader time span and can have many Epochs and Ages in it. see eon v. era v. period v. epoch v. age Cenozoic Era was 65 million years and consists of 7 Epochs with times spanning from less than one million years to up to 20 million years and within those epochs are 15 Ages which in some Epochs are characterized by the simple terms of early, middle and late. So depending on how long you think a time period may be just pick the correct term to go with it. I think you won't make everyone happy so being technically accurate is the answer no matter how wierd it sounds. I for one will play the stone epoch no matter what you call it. Also I see you have industrial and information but I love technological.

Thanks for the heads up. I think what is important is not to be technically accurate (it's a game after all, not a digital encyclopedia), but to use terms most people are using in their lives, things that will be clear and natural to them. Sometimes not technically accurate tems become very popular with common people to the point that they outperform technically accurate things it the common life. And in this game any term can be correct, since we don't have night and day cycles and any other time measurement, except real-life time which is used for convenience, not to measure in-game time. Thus I think any term of the above can be technically correct. The question is what is most widely used by people and will be the most clear. I assume it's "Age". As for the "technological" age you mentioned. We plan to have 3 ages like Industrial Age, Information Age, Space Age, with all of three are technological to my understanding. Again, I am not a native speaker, so I would like to have hints on this. I will explain them a bit: Industrial Age here is like an Earth time period from the second half of 19th century up to the WWII time. Information Age is kinda like our today plus some nearby future - computers, electronics, etc. Space Age is the far future - flying saucers, dome houses, cyborgs, etc. If you think there might be better and more clear name for one of those ages, please let me know your arguments.

No arguement from me. I just work in information technology and so I just feel like information is such a bland term versus technology. Again it will all work for me and I'll play whatever you call it!!
