Bitter sweet wealth victory

As many of you know I recently won the wealth victory. I thought I would post some thoughts and experiences about it. It was finished before this last balance update so while I hoarded resources in my towns for days on end to get it done it may be a bit easier or maybe I should say faster now to build up the needed resources to build all of the architects and the wonder of the world.

First off I did not start on the wonder right away. I wanted to build all the new Renaissance building first, in some ways this may have been good and in others it may have hindered the time it took me. it was good as there was no need to wait for my warehouses to get big enough to even build the wonder, but it hindered in that my town population was such my build times were much increased. Again the recent balance changes may have helped that I do not know.

I also had been ignoring the great architects as a waste of resources so my surprise when my wonder reached level 33 and required a book from an architect to go on to level 34 made the architects become my priority.Again I had to hoard resources to get those done and luckily for me an update with the town of Zodchiy came that allowed me to collect the full requirement of 6 books, Prior to that even with 7 towns I only had four architects.

The bitter part of obtaining victory is that I knew it would be game over :( The sweet part is knowing I did it first :)I think that all the alpha wipes prepared me for my kingdom to vanish at least. I also have kept firmly in mind through all of the game play that this is a session based came and that someday if you do not obtain a victory within the allotted time frame your kingdom will vanish anyhow.

The first four architects were a bit exciting to find out what they were going to build, the second set I did in Zodchiy all wanted the same resources and I was a bit put off that while they called them by different names they built the same exact structures. (Bers says I am nitpicking in this)

Overall I think the path to wealth victory might still need some twists and turns added since I now feel it may be too easy. I will see this for sure if I do it again. Which I may since the building part of this game really is what I enjoy the most. The buildings are so beautiful and as they evolve through the different ages I find it very enjoyable to see what will be next. I know you would think after five alpha stages I would be tired of them but truly they are so varied and well illustrated that I love to build each one again and again in my towns and through the ages.

And is the reward somewhat good ? Because to me it sounds quite boring to do, next alpha instead of trying war victory I think I'll do like others not matter what the reward is: research everything as soon as possible to enjoy the new content, then have fun fighting others randomly.

Congrats to Tuey for reaching the first victory ever "officially". There has been players who have built the Wonder in previous alphas, but now this is sort of "real" ending. It still needs a lots of work to do, so even now it is rather a draft to have at least something to do for those people who don't like to play the game on their own and need a clear goals.

I think the reward is the weakest part of victories currently. The victories has been low on our todo list, because only a few players reach them and majority have fun playing the game as sandbox, but as the game evolves we will surely have to address them more seriously. At the moment victory has following bonuses:

  • Increases the main stat limit by 10 (which stat depends on victory type, wealth increases vitality, so she can have 60 of it the next playthrough), but the number of points or levels will still be the same.
  • Her achievement tab will signal victory presence by having a stipe on top of her wealth achievement medal group. Not a big deal right now, but later when those medals will be visible in player info, this may motivate some players willing to show off.
  • The number of artifacts she is able to carry over to the next sesssion increased (by 1 atm I think)
  • There is a cutscene in the end which Tuey said was funny, but you can hardly call it tangible reward.

I know these rewards are probably laughable on it's own, but I still have a hard time to come up with a reward which will both be motivational enough, but also will not make you overpowered in the next run. If you have ideas about victory rewards which will fit this criteria - please post it.

By the way... how is tuey supposed to impress everyone with her huge building, if as soon as it reaches level 100 it get destroyed ? Better leave it level 99 to impress people I guess.

Congratulations, tuey, what a huge accomplishment!!

I have to say, though, i was very surprised to see your domain wiped off the map.  I mean, i guess intuitively, i knew this was what would happend once a 'victory' is achieved in this game, but it does make me wonder if i'd even want to achieve a victory, only to have all my hard work in getting there, get instantly wiped away!  I know it will get wiped anyway, at the end of a 'session', but hmmmm....still, like goz sort of suggests, in the case of a wealth victory, you put so much effort into building the wonder, but how can you 'enjoy' it when it gets wiped right away!!

Also, a very important part of this game, clearly, are the interactions you have and the relationships you build with other players, specifically those within your alliance.  Depending on the style of game that you are playing, whether you are a 'warrior' or a 'farmer', it doesn't really matter, once you are part of an alliance, you become part of a 'team' that are equally important in different ways.  So, once someone achieves a 'victory', sure your alliance mates will be happy for you for achieving the victory, but it also means that they are losing maybe a very vital member of their team!  Is there no way that you can 'achieve' a victory, but still have the option to continue on with the 'session' or in this case, the remainder of the alpha, so that your alliance doesn't lose a member?  Also, what if you went for one victory, but still wanted the opportunity to check out the other 'victories' available?  For example, you 'won' wealth, but wanted to play around a bit more with the 'adventure' side of it once that is fully implemented and there are more quests to complete?  Shouldn't this be an option to be able to continue 'playing' the game, even though you've 'won'?

You are not forced to achieve a victory as fast as possible. One could keep Wonder building at lvl 99 for a long time or be at a point where he needs to do only one more thing to achieve any of the other victory types, and only get lvl 100 wonder or meet the requirements for any victory when the game session is about to end.

But i found it odd as well that our kingdom and hero will be gone when we achieve a victory, we could be deleted with the rest of the players when the session ends.

I think you are all confusing the end of an alpha with the session I am talking about. When the game is released it will be session based. Meaning you will start, and at the end of some predetermined time, it will end, either in victory or in some cataclysmic event. This will not be the same moment as everyone else like at the end of an alpha stage but at a time decided by the Devs to be how long they think it should take to reach one of the 6 victories. It will be different for everyone unless you happen to start at the exact same moment as another player.

So while I am hearing why go for a victory at all, I am trying to test through and play the game as it is meant to be played. If no one tests an actual victory how will we ever know they work

What victory gives what stat ? I guess science victory gives intellect, to prepare for war victory which would give, strength I guess ? I'm pretty sure no one use more than 15 points in strength anyway, actually I'm pretty sure most players max intellect then use the rest to allow some perks and the rest in charisma for army life.
Culture victory would give wisdom I guess, I don't know about Adventure Wealth and Expansion but anyway: the 3 stats for the hero are not good enough (except for a communality player who wants to kill a whole army alone like icebolt saw), and unless I'm wrong armor ones are not good enough compared to life ones even with units with high armor and healers to make it more useful.

Ofcourse it is not enough, if you read my response attentively you will noticed I have admitted that and asked to post the ideas of how to improve it, instead of stating the obvious once again.

No... I did mean that intellect charisma and maybe even wisdom, are way better than vitality strength dexterity, thus the "(except for a communality player who wants to kill a whole army alone like icebolt saw)", you didn't read my own reply attentively.

Maybe they could get some of the pets or other type of things that are being given for the invites.

I know I want one of those baby dragons that you gave to someone. I just want to see all that cuteness...lol

I completely agree! I would love to do the Wealth Victory and I love quests and having 'things to do' instead of sandboxing. But I don't want it to all be over once I have completed the Victory. When the game is officially finished, then sure, I would click on 'Wealth Victory game' and go hell for leather but in this current game, I think it is better to have it as an accomplishment and the ability to keep on going (if you want to) and go for other victories.

I like the sound of getting a pet as a reward, since I have no friends to invite to the game. lol

Sounds reasonable. They will be different ones though, not the one you can get through invites. I was also thought about giving unique artifacts, so those min-maxers who do not care about fluff will be pleased too.

I think unique artifacts is a great idea. :) As well as the pets of course. :D
