More often then not, the chat posts show up on the screen, covering the game while I am playing.

You can always close the chat.

The chat is collapsed. That is why she is seeing it pop up in her screen view.

the chat is closed. even when i log into the game. All the chats (quite a few) show up over my game. None of them are my chats. Just what ever is written in public chat ends up in front of my game.

That is how it currently works.  The chat and notifications briefly appear on screen and disappear.

okay, thank you for clearing that up for me.  what about during the game? an hour or 2 onto the game it does it as well. not all the time, but maybe 3 or 4 times in an hour or so chat will all of a sudden pop up while i am exploring.

A lot of time can go by without anyone saying a word in common chat and when they finally do post something it will appear on your screen.  That is the only reason I can think of for the time between chat sightings.  If you have people on your friends list you should be seeing them log on and off on your screen as well.  :-)

you will also see notifications for your hero as well, storage's are too full or food consumption too high etc.
