Hhhm, then it seems to be buggy: I clicked on one of those slots, so that it went on and off (green "+" symbol and man figure alternating) without really waiting for something to be trained, but still research time went down - which I of course like very much. ;))) The stone was correctly deducted from my stone pile though.
