Re spying: Yes, you
can use the spies to gather information on resources, etc.. But if you want to know exactly what a town’s
defense is - all you have to do is send one fighter (of any kind) to that town. Of course, the one unit will be killed when
they arrive but you’ll have a report on exactly what defenses that town has. And because
the town can’t attack you on the way to their location there isn’t anything they
can do to stop it.

Yes, it is a known issue. Spying itself is also not working how it is supposed to be.

I don't know if this thread is the place to ask, but I have a question about spies. The spies don't have the possibility to battle monsters, but when I march my army inside a town to battle a group of monsters, spies go with the army too and, of course, are the first to be killed. So I train spies constantly after a battle. Of course, I can send them beforehand to some other town, but this is very annoying and I often forget to do it. Do I miss something that can prevent spies from going to battle?

Sometimes you may want to use units not very skilled for combat as a meat shield so spies/explorers going to battle is ok. I don't think we can do anything better than it is now when you can send away/hide in shelter units you don't want to use in battle. Another option would be to add another popup where you can pick what types or units you want to follow the flag, but it is not trivial to implement and I don't think it is much better than what you can do by hiding/sending away units individually.

Another popup for spies only would be unnecessary complication - I only thought that spies could be excluded from army movement. It never occurred to me that I can use them as cannon fodder, maybe it is useful in army to army battles.

Spies in town are also good for knowing if someone else is spying on you

Thanks, I learned this from "older" players like you, so I try to keep at least two in each town.
