Monsters will Attack! (from Creature Habitats)

Monsters will Attack! (from Creature Habitats)

Teya becomes a little bit more dangerous place now. In this update we are adding Creature Habitats - a place where monsters dwell and can attack or be attacked.

Creature Habitats - what are they?

They are special "monster towns" that have monster units and buildings. They will be appearing on world map one by one over time. After they appear they will be growing, accumulating resources, buildings structrures inside of them and training units. From time to time when they grow enough strength they will be launching attacks on one of your towns.

There are ways to deal with them. Aside just defending their attacks you can attack them yourself. If you kill their units or steal their resources, it will give you more time until they gather their strength again. You can even destroy those habitats with destructive weapons and solve that problem once and for all.

Another way to deal with attacking monsters is to engage in PVP activity. When you are fighting other players (either offensively or defensively), monsters become less active and wait until your PVP activity decreases. If you are regularily fighting other players, chances are monsters won't attack you at all. Attackers in PVP receive bigger "grace periods" from monsters than defenders.

Since Creature Habitats apear on world map gradually over time, they will have the most effect on new heroes.

There are some other factors that taken into account with monster activity. The biggest factor is number of victories. If your specific hero reached victories previously, monsters will be more active - grow faster, attack more, etc. Your current technology also affect it slightly. If your technology progress is low, they will be less active, to let you develop easier. The age of your kingdom also affects it - old kingdoms that are closer to apocalypse may face stronger monsters.

Interesting Facts about Creature Habitats

  • Some types creatures and habitats are unique to specific climate and won't appear in other climates.
  • Monsters can do both plunder and destructive attacks. In fact, a lot of monsters can damage walls and buildings!
  • Popups that display Quest Locations and Places of Interest now merged together and display Creature Habitats too.
  • If hero is in vacation mode, creatures are not active.
  • Allies cannot see attacking creatures and their habitats, but can reinforce towns to help defending against them if defending player asks. Since they cannot see them, catacombs would be the most effective.
  • Truce protects you from monster attacks
  • You cannot convert them and they cannot convert you.

Other Changes

  • Now hero outfit equipped during battle is stored correctly in the replay (it was displaying currently equipped one before). Because of this, internal replay structure was changed and all replays had to be deleted.
  • Button to find other player's town now works if any town of that player was uncovered.
  • Fixed spam with asking for protection popup
  • Nuclear Missile bug fixed when it did not do full damage sometimes.
  • Selected place of interest displays current place index in the group of the same type (i.e. 1/10)

If you have an old hero, those couple of habitats that appeared are very weak and can be easilty destroyed. They are designed to be created with the hero creation and intended to grow as you grow. Best effect would be for new or recently created heroes.

my hero is now 26 days old, but none of the monster towns appeared, when will I have them? thanks

Most likely they are present, but you havent uncovered them yet. You have to find them or wait until they attack you.

Question - I have attacked and plundered - but when i go to the reports there is no info.  Is this a bug

Please be more descriptive

Had the first round of monsters attack me today. Questions:

1) Why do they show as anonymous? I cannot tell they are from the Monster Town, or another player using guerilla.  If I had more than one monster town, how would I know which town is the active one that I should go reduce?

2) Do the monsters only attack while you are logged on? Or can they attack while you are offline?  I dont think remembering to store my valuable troops, or move them to a den, or otherwise, is something I want to add to my bedtime list of chores every day.

I am being attacked by 14 snowmen.  1 Large, 2 Medium and 11 small.  My hero is 41 days old.

3) Can you explain the mechanics of how the target town the monsters will attack is selected?  Is it the closest town?  Is it random?  Is there any way we could predict where the monsters might go?

1) Not sure what you mean. The fact that it says "Anonymous" in the reports? When actual attack happens I think you can see trace to the originating monster town.

2) No, they have their own life and can attack anytime. If you want to prevent their attacks - attack them yourself.

3) It is random, but in when close to apocalypse they will try to prioritize less cultural towns so it will not complicate Culture Victory too much.

1) The monsters were attacking as "Anonym".  I could not trace the trail back to monster den.  The monster den was origonally under fog when they attacked and I could not see it previously.  After attack, the Den was visible in the fog.

I destroyed a Breathing Glacier, but it did not add to my "Scorched Earth" (destroy enemy towns) tally.  It did add to my destruction of military building levels achievement score.

"If you are regularily fighting other players, chances are monsters won't attack you at all. Attackers in PVP receive bigger "grace periods" from monsters than defenders."

Do spying, plundering and onslaught all count, as PvP, for this?

Casual Players Will Not Be Offended

But if you don't care about fighting other players and would like to enjoy steady expansion, trading, quests, or puzzles, you will feel right at home too. You can choose different sets of starting bonuses and drawbacks with one of them bringing beginner players a very serious defense bonus for the sacrifice of attack power. And you will keep that protection until you feel ready to interact with others, not after a small amount of time like one week.

So, the above direct quote is a lie then? False advertising to get people in? And what about the "six possible victories" claim? Will that ever eventuate, or will that go the way of Acts II and III?

This game is much more friendly towards casual players than most other MMO strategy games where more often than not you are wiped right after novice protection ends, can't see how this is false advertisement.

Depends on which victory are you talking about. Currently we have 3 out of 6 implemented. Adventure victory naturally needs all acts completed, because that victory involves beating the game story so that's a long shot. Science victory can be implemented after we add Space Age. I was planning to add Space Age, half of the art for it is done, but artist that was working on remaining art went to war fight against russia so it is currently on hold.

I had noticed that when an attack hits a monster town, it is over "instantly" regardless of how many rounds are fought.

Today I tried to link 2 attacking groups, only for the attacks to arrive seperately.

I sent hero with siege, to make use of hero boosts and sent a "meat shield" of other troops, from another town.

Yes, unfortuantely that's how it is implemented. Nothing can be done about it.

So what do you plan to do now ? You could start working on something else, but you could still finish everything else about space age so once the artist is back there will be just that left to do. It would also avoid something that happened with information age: some units not released at first and released a few weeks/months later, here everything could be there immediately. It sure is about time that we wait for space age, other ages were released every 6 months/1 year while information age is there since many years. Also, it might be just me, but really if it's just that, I would absolutely not care if instead of the normal space age artworks we had medieval buildings as long as they work, and it would allow testing them before they get their final look, after all this game is technically still in beta, a lot of descriptions have the word "todo", some "NOT WORKING", we are on "Debug" server and there are a lot of typos.

Well to avoid confusing anyone you can add the text "TEMPORARY ARTWORK" on the space age buildings, I actually saw that on cards in hearthstone even though we weren't supposed to see it.

I am not a fan of such solution. When there is "TODO" on icons ti's tolerable, but when your town full of that and you looking at it all the time... eeew... not good.

We will work on something smaller next week we are releasing German translation finally. I was also thinking about translating the game to one of the other languages like French using automated translation program. Would still be better than having it in English? or not?

Also I was thinking about improving item crafting a bit - add some rare "legendary" modifiers that are more regular than usual, but can have only 1 per artifact. Also we have a number of equipment drawn, but not yet used in the game - those could be "legendary" artifacts that can be crafted using special kind of ores.

Another thing that can be done is work on Secret Library, but that's more complicated and will require significantly more time and effort.

Not to mention there is a lot of work on refactoring server side of things which I have been busy with since the beginning of Spring.

Well, when I was in the not normally available space age, the roads were the ones of stone age, so with the floor of information age buildings it looked weird and ugly, but personally, I completely stopped paying attention about it the next day if not even before, so I wouldn't mind medieval buildings everywhere. Conversely, I found a lot of artworks in the game very nice, but stopped paying attention about them very quickly, now I'm even almost always playing the game with maximum zoom out so I don't even have on my screen the artworks in full quality and I don't care.

About french translation: automated software make a lot of mistakes, so if you decide to do that you should seriously add a warning about it. It also doesn't "translate" things that don't make sense in other languages, like "Why hello there !" makes no sense when directly translated in french.

The special kind of ore you are talking about: is it the black one you get when upgrading a godly crystal ? It's currently useless.

What would refactoring the sever do, make it faster ?
